Personal Names in Sogdian Texts
Iranisches Personennamenbuch Band II: Mitteliranisches Personennamen Faszikel 8
Reihe: Sitzungsberichte der philosophisch-historischen KlasseThe present fascicle continues the Middle Iranian part of the Iranisches Personennamenbuch. It deals with personal names attested in published texts in Sogdian language, an eastern Iranian vernacular which came down to us from the texts composed between first centuries CE and 11th century in Sogdian heartland (today, parts of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan) and along the routes of the Great Silk road, where Sogdians used to vend and settle. More than 1600 items collected in the volume and arranged alphabetically include all the personal names found in Sogdian texts published so far (either of Sogdian, other Iranian or non-Iranian provenance; either real or fictitious) as well as adjectives denoting origin, nicknames or titles which were used as personal names. The standard entry starts with the name in transliteration, its (mostly tentative) transcription, indication of gender of the person. Further, quotations from the texts (often relatively lengthy) where the name appears are given. It is followed by indication of prosopography of the bearer of the name, and the etymology of the name. Remarks on more particular details are given in petite. Namesakes are placed in one entry. The volume starts with the introduction, list of abbreviations and bibliography and ends with the reverse and prosopographical indices.
